Some camping grounds are charging a minimum rate for two people when I and over 2000 others who travel alone and have invested in vehicles that have full facility on board and are still asked to pay these massive ($40.00 per night ) rates find this practice unrealistic and discriminating. Just 'who is driving this us to look for freedom camping' .
When it comes to value, 'beauty being in the eye of the beholder'. To each the value of the best beach, forest, lake side or just the best kept gardens may well be the optimum for which you are happy to find satisfaction and value.
I have aired my thoughts to this vein earlier on my 'Roadway Rambling'
The best beach in the country and the rate to stay can demand a 'long before the holiday' budgeting plan to share full to the brim sites, no hot water for showers after 6.30pm, tired paint and minimal maintenance over the past years. Just how big a bang for your buck are you really getting. I know you go back because that's where you and the family have always gone. Well, when the budget gets badly stretched or you are brave enough for a change check out the many places shown throughout this site. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Remember the market will set the rates and as long as these high prices are being paid then they will remain and likely increase. Some may want to add that these high prices ensure the camping ground remains. I love to debate that one !

_____________________________ How to find real value
Lets play with some numbers.... A well known 'top number' group appears to have structured the rate at most locations for a powered camper van site priced at $40.00 per night.
That's only $20.00 each for two people.
However is the same $40.00 rate for one person.
Is that the same as the fuel station charging you for two tank fulls when you only wanted and got one ?
After all your occupying the same forecourt space.
Miranda Holiday Park has it's rate at $20.00 per person which includes hot pool entry (around $10.00 - $12.00) making the powered site good value at $8.00 - $10.00 each. last time I was there it also attracted the NZMCA discount.
Matamata's Opal Hot Springs & Holiday Park at a rate of $12.00 - $14.00 per person. Now applying the same hot pool entry concession we are looking at somewhere between $2.00 - $4.00 per night per person.
I can hear the cry "Oh those examples are in the country side where land rates are less !"
Then look at Kiwipaka, a short walk to the heart of Rotorua.
A hot pool, large kitchen area, a lively bar and all for $10.50 per night per person.
I will let you work the numbers. Now go look at Cambridge Country Lodge and see how there figures compare.
I stopped for fortnight last year at one of my favorite Far North Campgrounds. Recently installed individually metered power. It was around July-August and not anywhere near like 'The Winter-less North' I went in search of. I made good use of the power appliances that I have on board and had no hesitation to use the mains heater. My metered bill for the two weeks was less than $2.00 per day.
Look closely at the power charge or the differential in the per person rate for a non and powered site.
Reticulation costs, yes I understand but think about the cost of installing meters.
