 Welcome

The pops n parks site is dedicated to locating affordable stay over sites around New Zealand. As there are no dangerous animals and few venomous insects, NZ is very suitable for tramping, backpacking, cycling, tent, campervan, caravan and motorhome tours.

The legend :The discovery of New Zealand

Maui was a demi-god, who lived in Hawaiiki.

He possessed magic powers that not all of his family knew about.

One day when he was very young, he hid in the bottom of his brothers' boat in order to go out fishing with them.

Once out at sea, Maui was discovered by his brothers, but they were not able to take him back to shore as Maui made use of his magic powers, making the shoreline seem much further away than it was in reality.

So the brothers continued rowing, and once they were far out into the ocean Maui dropped his magic fishhook over the side of the waka. After a while he felt a strong tug on the line. This seemed to be too strong a tug to be any ordinary fish, so Maui called to his brothers for assistance.

After much straining and pulling, up suddenly surfaced Te Ika a Maui (the fish of Maui), known today as the North Island of New Zealand. Maui told his brothers that the Gods might be angry about this, and he asked his brothers to wait while he went to make peace with the Gods.

However, once Maui had gone his brothers began to argue among themselves about the possession of this new land. They took out their weapons and started pounding away at the catch. The blows on the land created the many mountains and valleys of the North Island today.

The South Island is known as Te Waka a Maui (the waka of Maui). Stewart Island, which lies at the very bottom of New Zealand, is known as Te Punga a Maui (Maui's anchor), as it was the anchor holding Maui's waka as he pulled in the giant fish.

Hi, My name is Gary.....

                                                  [NZMCA #24936]

...many years ago my mates and I would set off for the weekend and spend it camped in the woods or by the sea. Now a lot of energy is spent by so many trying to take that right away from us. Its a kiwi thing

This site is produced trying to maintain that outdoor experience that some commercial interests are trying to erode from those of us who want to do it the way it has always been..

[New data will be added to this site as my health and finances allow] .

...and to that end I have collected these photo shots in a hope of providing you with great places to visit and a better insight to what may be waiting for you to discover.

It's great to travel with friends...

....but sometimes you may prefer to be the only seagull on the beach.....

.....or enjoy quiet spots like these.

In planning the material to use on this site I have decided that commercial camping grounds have one if not several existing sites on which you can gain their details. As such, I will exclude camping grounds unless they come within my GEM rating (see page 'What is...' topic GEM) this site is dedicated to finding affordable and cost effective holiday stop overs.

Mixing low cost or freedom stops with higher paid stops can help stretch the holiday budget.

Support those district and city councils, retailers local charter clubs, churches and schools that provide 'freedom parking'

I want to encourage all vanners to patronise those areas that do make an effort to provide park over places available. Stock up your cupboards, clothing, dine out, refuel, get repairs and service work carried out while you go on a tour in these areas.

Some have commented on my page logo, I am not saying that the Kiwi is over done but the NZ fur seal is a great little mammal also worthy of icon status.
